Marie entered the butcher shop at opening time and asked for 65 kilos of beef.
Paul froze, knife still in his hand. The old woman normally lived modestly and only bought small amounts of meat. But that day, she counted her worn banknotes with trembling hands before hurriedly leaving with the heavy packages.
She claimed that her son had come to visit and that a large family meal was planned, but Paul soon learned that her son had died several years earlier.
The next morning, Marie returned and bought another 60 kilos. Then she came back again.
She avoided conversation, refused any help, and kept looking behind her as if someone were following her.
Rumors began spreading through the village: she was feeding stray dogs or secretly reselling the meat. But nobody understood why she carried the packages to an abandoned warehouse on the edge of the forest.
On the fourth day, Paul called the police.
When the officers arrived, they found traces of blood on the concrete floor, torn bags, and a metal door locked from the inside.
Marie was there, pale, with stained hands and terrified eyes.
— Please… she whispered. Don’t go inside.
The police forced the door open.
A heavy, damp, almost unbearable smell filled the air. They entered the darkness with their flashlights and were left speechless.

The police slowly moved through the building, their flashlights illuminating the corners of the huge warehouse.
Suddenly, they heard a faint whimper.
They turned around abruptly.
Behind some old crates, they discovered several metal cages.
Dozens of dogs were crammed inside, extremely thin and covered in injuries. Some were so weak they could no longer stand. Several had deep scars across their bodies and faces.
— My God… one of the officers whispered.
Marie burst into tears.
— I only wanted to save them…
The police quickly understood that the old woman was not responsible for what had happened.
After inspecting the warehouse, they discovered evidence that the dogs had been used for clandestine dog fights.
Men had been forcing them to fight for money. Whenever an animal became too weak or too badly injured to continue, they abandoned it in the warehouse.
Marie had discovered the place by chance several weeks earlier. She had seen the men and understood what was happening. Terrified that they might find her, she had not dared to immediately contact the police.
Instead, she had used all her savings to buy huge quantities of meat every day.
She secretly returned to feed the dogs, give them water, and try to save those who were still alive.
