I clearly remember that day, it was a quiet afternoon.
I was in the supermarket, a familiar place, doing my shopping like everyone else. The aisles were calm, and the soft light filtering through the windows gave a sense of serenity.
Then, I saw him. A man in a wheelchair, calmly doing his shopping. He seemed relaxed, not in a hurry, observing the shelves, taking his time to choose his products. Nothing special.
He headed towards the checkout, still calm, his wheelchair gliding gently on the floor.
I continued my shopping, but then I heard a noise behind me. A man approached the wheelchair, with a relaxed attitude. Then he said something that I didn’t immediately understand. I listened carefully, intrigued.

The other man, without any shame, said to him: “You could give up your place, you have nowhere to go, you don’t need to hurry.”
He laughed, as if it were just a joke, a simple comment. But I saw the first man’s reaction, and it froze me.
The man in the wheelchair turned pale, and his face turned red. He didn’t respond immediately, but you could see the tension rising in him. The other man’s mocking look seemed to not understand what he had just triggered.
It was just a simple comment, but for the man in the wheelchair, it felt like a stab. It wasn’t just a matter of space or time. It was much more than that.
The lightness with which he addressed the subject, his laugh – all of it horrified me. As if just being in a wheelchair justified treating him like that.
The lack of respect, the irony in his voice – it all seemed so unfair. I had never seen such contempt, not in this way.
I stood there, frozen, watching the scene. The man in the wheelchair silently paid for his shopping, standing up slightly to grab his bags, but he didn’t react.
The other man, apparently satisfied with his “joke,” walked away, unaware of the harm he had just caused. The tension hung in the air, and I felt shocked, disturbed by this lack of respect.
