“Auntie… you’re not going to hurt me, right?” my seven-year-old niece asked me when I gave her a bath. At that moment, I understood that something was really wrong in my brother’s house.😱
That week, I was taking care of Léa while he was working. Since I had picked her up, she seemed different: quiet, hands clenched, her gaze lost out the window. At home, I tried to reassure her with her favorite meals, but she ate cautiously, as if every movement had to be measured.
When I took her to the bathroom, she froze in the bathtub, motionless, shoulders tense. I smiled at her: “It’s going to be okay, sweetheart, we can take our time.” And she whispered: “Auntie… you’re not going to hit me, right?”
Her cautious look chilled me to the bone. 😱 Slowly, I took her pajama top and discovered the marks: yellowish and purple bruises, red marks shaped like fingers pressed against her skin.😱
I knelt down and asked her: “Who did this to you, Léa?” She whispered: “Daddy gets angry when I move too much. He says baths are for washing away bad behavior.”
I asked her if her mother knew. She shook her head: “Mom was often tired, and when Dad got angry, he said I was making his life harder… so I tried to be good.”
I stood frozen, my heart tight. After a few seconds of shock, I pulled myself together and took action, and what I did was fatal for the child.

With a heavy heart, I wrapped her in a towel and took her to the hospital. The doctors immediately took the situation seriously and began the necessary examinations.
I then went to file a report with the police, describing the marks and Léa’s unusual behavior. During the investigation, it appeared that the truth was very different from what the child had suggested. It was the nanny, who was supposed to look after her while her parents were working, who had abused her. The injuries were the result of her repeated violence.
Léa, terrified, was afraid that anyone would discover the truth. She confided in me that she would tell adults it was her father if anyone asked questions, because she feared retaliation from the nanny.
The police took the situation very seriously and immediately removed the nanny from the house, placing Léa in a safe environment, away from any threat.
Sitting beside her at the hospital, I held her in my arms and promised her that she would never again be alone facing fear. That day, I understood the importance of listening carefully to children, because even a simple whisper can reveal a crucial truth that saves lives.
