My mother-in-law threw every dish I cooked into the toilet… until the day she forgot to flush. 😱
“Your wife is making me sick. If she keeps cooking like this, she’ll end up sending me to the hospital!”
For three years, my mother-in-law Gertrude repeated this sentence to my husband Brandon. And for three years, he believed her.
Everything changed one morning when my four-year-old daughter Rosie asked me:
— Mom, why did Grandma tell Dad that you’re a bad person?
Ever since Gertrude had been living with us, she criticized everything, especially my cooking. I could spend hours preparing a meal, and she would immediately push it away.
— This is impossible to eat! You’re trying to make me sick again!
Little by little, Brandon stopped defending me. Then, one evening, he even asked me to go stay somewhere else for a few days so that he and his mother could have some peace and quiet.
I was a general practitioner, but in my own home, I no longer understood anything.
One day, I prepared meatballs. Gertrude barely looked at them before going to the bathroom.
A few minutes later, I entered the bathroom. She had forgotten to flush.
Floating in the toilet were my meatballs… mixed with a disturbing amount of blood. 😮😮
I froze. Her pale complexion, cold sweat, abdominal pain, and frequent trips to the bathroom immediately came back to me.
Suddenly, everything took on a different meaning. Maybe she wasn’t throwing away my food because she hated my cooking.
Maybe she was hiding a secret connected to something she was desperately trying to protect. 😮😮

She was doing it to protect something. But what? 😮
I went back to the kitchen and found Gertrude sitting at the table, her hands trembling.
— You have to tell me the truth, I whispered. Why have you been doing this for three years?
She remained silent for a long time before taking an envelope out of her bag.
Inside were several medical test results and a letter.
— Three years ago, I found out that I had a serious intestinal disease. The doctors explained to me that certain foods could worsen my symptoms. But I was ashamed to tell Brandon. I knew he would drop everything to take care of me.
She wiped away her tears.
— So I made up this story. I made him believe that your cooking was making me sick so that he would never understand the real reason for my pain. And when I threw your dishes away, it was because I could no longer eat without starting to bleed.
I remained silent.
— But why did you make me out to be a bad person?
Gertrude lowered her head.
— Because I wanted him to stay close to me… and ask you to leave.
Brandon, who had heard everything from the hallway, stepped closer, completely devastated.
That day, he understood that his mother was sick… but he also realized that, in trying to protect him, she had destroyed our family.
