Conjoined twins separated at the age of four, now thriving at 17 with one leg each, “feel like everyone else”.
Kendra and Maliyah Herrin, separated surgically at the age of four, have become symbols of resilience after a 26-hour operation.😱
At birth, they shared an abdomen, pelvis, liver, kidney, large intestine, and legs—a rare condition that required years of consideration before their parents, Erin and Jake, decided to separate them.
The unprecedented and risky surgery left both sisters with one leg each, but it gave them a chance at a longer, more independent life. Today, despite the challenges of scoliosis and health issues, they live like ordinary teenagers.
“We feel like everyone else. We just have a few little differences,” they shared in an interview. Their daily lives are now marked by school, friends, and activities like dance and sports, despite using crutches and strollers to get around.
The girls started a YouTube channel three years ago, where they share their story and experiences. They are also present on Instagram and a blog, where they spread positive messages and promote acceptance.

“The best part of having one leg is that we only have to paint one set of toes,” jokes Kendra. They’ve adapted to physical challenges with humor and great mental strength.
The twins have overcome major medical obstacles, including a kidney transplant for Maliyah, who faced rejection of the organ she received from their mother. However, thanks to an anonymous donor, she received a new kidney at the age of 15.
“Not everything has always been easy, but we’ve learned to accept our differences with grace and courage,” they added.
Today, Maliyah and Kendra are thriving in school and their social lives, surrounded by a loving and supportive family.
“High school is going great, and we’ve never been bullied,” says Maliyah, highlighting their luck in growing up in a kind environment.
Although they share many experiences, the sisters have distinct personalities: Kendra is more extroverted, while Maliyah is more reserved. But what unites them is their desire to live life to the fullest and set an example of resilience.
They continue to prove to the world that, despite difficult beginnings, anything is possible with determination, family support, and a positive attitude.
