My mother-in-law told me I had “eaten too much to go to the beach” and laughed when everyone agreed with her.

When Dylan suggested that we spend a week at the beach with his family, I wanted to believe that this vacation could really be enjoyable.

I was wrong. Our son was only eight months old, and I still had a few extra pounds from the pregnancy. I already felt self-conscious in a swimsuit and had almost canceled the trip because of it.

My mother-in-law, Diane, had never been particularly warm toward me, but usually she hid her dislike behind fake kindness.

That ended on the very first morning. We were sitting at the table having breakfast when she looked at my plate and smiled.

— Well, sweetheart, it looks like you’ve eaten too much to go to the beach today!

She said it loudly enough for everyone to hear.

The table fell silent for a few seconds. Then a few people laughed.

I smiled because I didn’t know what else to do.

But Diane continued. For several days, she made little remarks about my body, joking that some women “got their figure back” after pregnancy, while others apparently “stopped making any effort at all.”

What hurt me almost as much was Dylan’s attitude. He never once asked her to stop. He simply looked down, remained silent, and let everyone laugh.

I simply decided that I would no longer protect someone who clearly took pleasure in humiliating me. That evening, the whole family was supposed to gather on the beach for our annual family photo.

Then Diane rushed out of the beach house. Her face had turned bright red.

The moment she saw me, she pointed directly at me and started screaming:

— How could you do this to me?!

What I had done was so shocking to her that she was completely shaken.

I looked at her calmly without saying a word. Diane was trembling with anger.

— How could you do this to me?! You had no right!

Dylan approached, completely confused.

— Mom, what did she do?

I then took out my phone.

— You really want everyone to know? Fine.

I tapped the screen and played a video. It showed Diane entering my room a few hours earlier while everyone else was at the beach. She opened my suitcase and rummaged through my belongings.

But that wasn’t all. I had installed a small camera after noticing that some of my things had been disappearing since the beginning of our stay.

In a second video, Diane was talking on the phone with a woman and saying that she planned to make Dylan believe that I was a bad mother so that he would seek sole custody of our son.

Dylan’s face turned pale.

— Mom… tell me this isn’t true.

Diane tried to explain herself, but I interrupted her.

— I sent all the videos to Dylan and your entire family before I even came here.

She looked at me in horror.

— What did you do?!

I smiled sadly.

— Exactly what you deserved: I stopped protecting you.
