One Saturday evening, Julien thought his wife, Sophie, had taken their nine-year-old daughter, Émilie, to visit her grandmother, who had suffered a serious stroke. He had no reason to doubt this explanation.
Around 9 p.m., however, his cousin Antoine, who was attending a concert in town, sent him a surprising photograph. It showed Émilie in the arms of an unknown man, in the middle of the crowd.
Julien looked closely at the picture. There was no doubt: it was his daughter. The man was holding her affectionately while she sang. Even more disturbing was the fact that he was crying.
Antoine confirmed that Émilie had been with him since the beginning of the show.
Worried, Julien immediately called Sophie. After several attempts, she finally answered. When he confronted her with the photograph, she asked him not to jump to conclusions.

Sophie refused to answer over the phone and told him that they would all return home together around 10 p.m.

The man, visibly shaken, looked at Julien.

Both of them began to cry. Sophie took a deep breath before looking Julien straight in the eyes.
— This man’s name is Marc. He is your brother.
Julien stood frozen. At first, he thought he had heard incorrectly.
— My brother? That’s impossible. I’m an only child.
Marc lowered his eyes.
— You were… at least, that’s what you were always led to believe.
Sophie then explained that, before their wedding, she had discovered old correspondence concerning Julien’s family. His mother had had a first child, Marc, when she was very young. At the time, her parents had decided to give him to another family and had kept his existence a secret.
Years later, Marc found documents that allowed him to trace his origins. He eventually discovered that Julien existed.
But he had never dared to look for him.
— Then why was Émilie with you tonight? Julien asked, still shaken.
Marc smiled faintly.
— I simply wanted to meet my niece. Sophie helped me arrange this meeting because she knew you would need time to accept the truth.
Émilie then walked over to her father.
— I wanted you to be happy, Dad.
Julien looked at Marc for a long moment, then held out his hand.
