My 7-year-old son, Lucas, had always dreamed of having a little sister. When Emma was born, he was overjoyed. She had Down syndrome, but to him, that changed absolutely nothing.
— She’s perfect, he simply said as he held her in his arms.
He loved choosing her clothes, singing songs to her, and proudly showing her photos to the whole family. Yet, two weeks after we returned home, his behavior changed.
Lucas no longer wanted to sleep in his room. One evening, I found him lying under Emma’s crib, with his pillow and blanket.
— Why are you sleeping here? You have your own bed.
— I want to stay with her, he simply replied.
