Meeting the lost mother, years after her abandonment, at my father’s funeral

I was seven when my mother abandoned me. Since that day, a void has remained in my life, a void that I learned to fill over time, but which has never disappeared.

When my father passed away, I lost a central figure, but at the same time, I found myself alone, face to face with a past that was catching up with me. What I hadn’t anticipated was my mother’s presence at his funeral.

She was there, standing by the coffin, her gaze sharp, as if she had been waiting for this moment her entire life.

She approached me, staring at me with eyes full of reproach. I had no idea what she wanted.

A simple movement, but it changed everything. What was my mother trying to tell me after so many years of absence? Why this gesture now, and why at this exact moment?

She came closer and said something.

What she said shocked me… 😯 I discovered the reason for her abandonment. 😯 How is this possible? How could a mother do this?

What she did shocked me. She came closer, almost as if she intended to touch me, but stopped just a few centimeters away. A heavy silence fell between us, heavier than the pain of loss itself.

Then, in a cold and almost imperceptible voice, she said: “You were never the daughter I hoped for.”

Her words hit me like a slap, cold and direct. Every syllable, every inflection of her voice reminded me of abandonment, of betrayal.

At that moment, I felt as though all the past, all the wounds I had left behind, resurfaced in an instant.

She then turned and left without another word. She had left me there, alone in the middle of the crowd, in a room where everyone seemed unaware of the weight of what I had just experienced.

At that moment, I understood that, no matter how many years pass, some wounds never heal.
