The taxi ride to the house lasted only twenty minutes, but for me, it felt like an eternity. After three days in the hospital following a car accident, I was exhausted and just wanted to collapse in my bed. I thought Dallas would be happy to see me again, just like he had been at the beginning.
When I walked in, I expected to smell coffee or hear the television, but the house smelled of vanilla candles — which I had never bought — and a strange floral scent.
Then, I heard laughter coming from upstairs. My heart was pounding. As I went up, I saw Dallas in our bedroom, but he wasn’t alone. A woman with auburn hair was lying with him. Their complicity shattered me.
“We should get dressed,” she said. “She might call.”
“Relax,” replied Dallas. “My wife isn’t supposed to be back until tomorrow.”

I let him embrace me, but my heart was entirely different. It was as if the world around me froze in a moment of pure madness. He stepped back slightly, looking for my eyes, thinking everything could go back to normal, but he was wrong.
“I have some good news for you,” I said in a calm, almost light tone, to unsettle him. Dallas, thinking my words would comfort him, waited eagerly.
“I just got out of the hospital,” I continued, a fleeting smile on my lips, “My health problems are fixed. We can finally consider having a baby, Dallas.”
I saw the spark of happiness cross his face, thinking he had won everything. But I wasn’t finished yet. I had made a big decision, and he was no longer part of it.
“But, after everything I’ve discovered, I realize you’re not the person I should have a family with.” I let my words sink in like needles into his skin. “You betrayed me, Dallas, with astonishing ease. You lied to me, and I can’t imagine carrying a child with someone like you.”
I let a long silence settle, looking at him with a calmness I had never known before. “What I saw today opened my eyes. You’re not who I thought you were, and you will never be the father of my child.”
Dallas didn’t move, frozen by the truth that had just exploded in his face. I took a deep breath and headed for the door.
