In front of 187 guests, I said a sentence I would regret for a long time.
— If you manage to make my children walk again, I’ll take you home and make you a member of this family.
A few guests laughed nervously. My wife, Sarah, gave me a stern look. For two years, our eight-year-old twins, Lucas and Emma, had been unable to walk on their own after an accident on the highway. Despite rehabilitation, there had been no lasting improvement.

Sarah turned pale.

She whispered:
— I gave that bracelet to that woman on the night of the accident.

She burst into tears.
