Two months after signing my divorce papers, I went alone for an ultrasound at a private clinic in Madrid. I did not expect to run into my ex-husband, Daniel Morgan, as I left the neurology department.
He stopped dead when he saw me. His gaze slowly dropped to my belly, which my loose coat could no longer hide.
— Are you sick? Why did you come alone?
I instinctively placed a hand on my belly.
— I’m not sick, I’m pregnant.
For three years, I had lived in the shadow of my husband, a wealthy businessman who was always absorbed in his work. Daniel came home late, canceled our dinners, and kept a strange distance from me.
At night, when he sometimes held me in his arms, he always whispered the same name:
— Sarah…
I had then believed that he loved another woman. When Daniel told me that he wanted a divorce, I did not insist. I signed in silence, while three positive pregnancy tests were hidden in my bag.
A week later, I had left our home and decided to start my life over alone.
Now he stared at my belly in shock.
— How many months pregnant are you?
— Almost four months.
His face changed immediately.
— Then… this child is…
— It’s no longer your problem.
I wanted to enter the examination room, but Daniel grabbed my wrist.
— Tell me who the father is!
I pulled away abruptly.
— You abandoned me without even asking how I was going to live. And now, that’s the first thing you want to know?
I entered the room and closed the door. A few minutes later, the sound of my baby’s heartbeat filled the room. My eyes filled with tears. Then the door opened. Daniel appeared, deeply shaken. The doctor smiled as she looked at the screen.
— The father arrived just in time. Would you like to know the baby’s sex?
Daniel looked at me.
— Why didn’t you tell me I was going to be a father?
I did not yet know that the truth was going to turn my whole life upside down: Daniel had not left me for another woman. No, not at all, there was another, even more shocking reason.😮😮😮

Daniel lowered his eyes, unable to answer. After a few seconds, he murmured:
— Because I didn’t want you to stay with me out of pity.
I looked at him without understanding.
— What are you talking about?
He took a deep breath before confessing the truth to me. A few months before our divorce, he had learned that he was suffering from a serious and incurable illness. The doctors had explained to him that his condition would gradually worsen and that he probably had very little time left.
— When I found out, I thought of you. I knew you wanted to start a family, have children, build a happy future. I didn’t want to tie you to a sick man.
Tears were now streaming down his face.
— The name you heard at night… Sarah… was my neurologist’s name. I asked her to explain my results to me, to understand how much time I had left.
I remained silent, overwhelmed.
— So you left me to protect me?
Daniel slowly nodded.
— I thought disappearing from your life would be easier than watching you suffer with me.
I placed a hand on my belly.
— But you had no right to decide our future alone.
He lowered his head.
— I know. And today, I regret every second of that silence.
The doctor watched us with emotion before smiling gently.
— Your baby is perfectly healthy.
Daniel raised his eyes toward me. For the first time since our separation, I saw not detachment in his eyes, but love… and an immense fear of finally losing the only family he had wanted to protect.
