My name is Álvaro. Since my wife’s death, I had been living alone in a large house. My three children rarely came to visit, except when they needed money.
Lucía, my new home aide, had been working for me for twelve days.
One afternoon, I placed an envelope containing €6,000 beside my armchair, then closed my eyes.
Lucía walked in. She noticed the money but didn’t touch it. She simply covered me with a blanket and kissed my forehead.
Then she whispered:
— I hope Alba can hold on a little longer…
Later, I discovered that Alba was her eight-year-old daughter, who was seriously ill with a heart condition. Lucía needed €48,000 to pay for an urgent operation.
That night, I called my lawyer.
— I want to pay for the operation, but Lucía mustn’t know.
What I didn’t know then was that my son Javier was already monitoring my bank accounts. And when he discovered my plan, he made a terrible decision…😮

The next morning, Javier arrived at my house furious. He was holding a bank statement in his hand.
— Dad, are you really planning to give €48,000 to this stranger? She’s manipulating you!
I explained Alba’s illness to him, but he refused to listen.
— That woman wants your inheritance! I’ll make sure she gets fired!
A few hours later, Lucía came to see me in tears.
— Mr. Álvaro, your son is accusing me of stealing money. He’s threatening to press charges against me.
I immediately understood his plan. Javier wanted to get rid of Lucía before I could help her daughter. I opened my desk drawer and took out the envelope containing the €6,000.
— This money has been here from the beginning. Lucía has never touched it.
Then I called my lawyer in front of Javier.
— Tomás, prepare the documents. I want to change my will.
My son turned pale.
— You’re going to disinherit us for a stranger?
— No, Javier. I’m simply going to stop rewarding your selfishness.
I established a fund to pay for Alba’s operation and help other sick children. I also arranged for a significant portion of my estate to be donated to the fund after my death.
My children would still receive part of their inheritance, but they would no longer be able to control my decisions.
Two months later, Alba underwent a successful operation.
When Lucía discovered who had paid the medical expenses, she broke down in tears.
— Why did you do all this for us?
I took her hands in mine.
— Because you treated me like a human being when my own children saw nothing but a bank account.
A few weeks later, Alba came to visit me. She gave me a drawing depicting three people standing in front of a house.
Underneath, she had written:
“Thank you, Grandpa Álvaro.”
For the first time in fourteen years, my house no longer felt empty.
