At 15, he promised me 60 sunflowers for my 60th birthday… 45 years after his death, someone kept his promise

At fifteen, Danny promised me he would give me sixty sunflowers for my sixtieth birthday. At the time, we were inseparable. We had grown up three houses away from each other and had fallen in love before we even understood what it meant.

One summer, in front of a flower stand, I had jokingly told him that at sixty, I would probably be an old woman whom no one would buy flowers for anymore.

Danny immediately replied:

— Then I’ll bring you sixty sunflowers. One for each year.

I never would have imagined that this promise would follow me throughout my entire life.

A few years later, while we were still dreaming of university, marriage, and a little house, a terrible fire caused by fireworks broke out during a neighborhood celebration. Danny never made it out.

I eventually married another man and we had two wonderful children. But my marriage was far from happy. After years of infidelities and forgiveness, I finally divorced at fifty-seven.

When my sixtieth birthday arrived, all I wanted was a quiet dinner with my children.

Yet, that morning, when I opened my door, I froze 😮😮. My porch was completely covered with sunflowers.

I counted them, there were exactly sixty.😮

Behind the flowers was an old wooden box tied with a faded yellow ribbon. Inside, there was a single note.

My hands trembled as I unfolded it. From the very first line, tears filled my eyes.

I didn’t have time to read the rest.

Knock. Knock. Knock. 😮 Three slow knocks echoed at my door. I looked up, my heart pounding, someone was there.😮

At 15, he promised me 60 sunflowers for my 60th birthday… 45 years after his death, someone kept his promise

I slowly got up and opened the door. An elderly man I did not know was standing on the doorstep. He was holding an old photograph of Danny and me, taken when we were fifteen, in front of the same flower stand.

— Are you Claire? he asked in a trembling voice.

I nodded.

— My name is Thomas. I was Danny’s best friend.

My heart tightened.

He handed me a second letter.

— Danny entrusted it to me a few days before the fire. He asked me to give it to you on your sixtieth birthday, no matter what happened.

I unfolded the paper.

At 15, he promised me 60 sunflowers for my 60th birthday… 45 years after his death, someone kept his promise

«If you are reading this letter, it means I couldn’t keep my promise myself. But I want you to know one thing: I never stopped loving you. I am sending you these sixty sunflowers to remind you that some promises survive time. Live, laugh, love again. Never let my absence steal your years from you.»

I burst into tears.

Thomas smiled sadly.

— Danny had also saved money for these flowers. He asked me to add to the amount each year if necessary.

I looked at the sunflowers, then at the sky. For the first time in forty-five years, I smiled. Danny had kept his promise. And, that day, I decided to keep mine: to finally live life to the fullest.
