— Aren’t you ashamed? At your age, wearing a swimsuit like that?
A horrible woman mocked me by the pool, claiming that at my age I should be ashamed to wear a swimsuit. But what my six-year-old granddaughter did next left the woman completely shaken.
I was sixty-five years old and simply wanted to give Amelia a happy birthday. A year earlier, she had lost both of her parents in a car accident. Since then, I had become much more than just her grandmother: I prepared her meals, took her to school, and stayed beside her whenever she woke up crying.
— Grandma, are you going to leave too someday? — she sometimes asked me.
— No, sweetheart. You and I are a team.
Money was tight. I worked more hours at the grocery store, saved every penny, and repaired everything I could instead of buying new things. But for her sixth birthday, I had managed to save enough to reserve two sun loungers at a beautiful resort with a swimming pool.
Amelia asked for only one thing:
— Grandma, can we have matching swimsuits?
We chose two blue swimsuits with white trim.
That day was wonderful. We swam, laughed, and splashed each other like children. But when I got out of the pool, an elegantly dressed woman began staring at me.
— Aren’t you ashamed? At your age, wearing a swimsuit like that? 😮
Her friends giggled. I pulled my cover-up tighter around myself, feeling humiliated.
— It’s just a swimming pool, I replied quietly.
Amelia looked at me without saying a word, then asked one of the employees to show her where the restrooms were.
A few minutes later, she returned with the pool manager. And what she did next left all of us completely stunned. 😮😮

She pointed at the woman.
— It’s her. She’s the one who made my grandma want to leave on my birthday.
The manager turned toward the woman and said a few words that immediately wiped the smile from her face.
— Ma’am, no one here has the right to humiliate another guest. Your behavior is unacceptable. I’m going to ask you to leave the pool immediately.
The woman stood there with her mouth open.
Amelia came over to me and took my hand.
— Grandma, you’re beautiful. And you should never be ashamed of yourself.
Those few words brought tears to my eyes. I knelt in front of her and hugged her tightly. The woman, now completely silent, gathered her belongings and walked away under the watchful eyes of everyone around.
Before leaving, Amelia simply said to her:
— My grandma has already cried enough. So please never make her cry again.
That day, I realized that even at just six years old, Amelia already had tremendous courage. And most importantly, she reminded me of something I had forgotten:
We are never too old to be happy.
