Marc Vidal had returned from Germany four days early to surprise his wife, Élise, who had just undergone a C-section. After several months away from Madrid for work, he dreamed of seeing his wife and their newborn again. He had even prepared several gifts.
But when he entered their apartment, he immediately realized that something was wrong.
Élise was alone in the kitchen, pale and exhausted, holding their baby in her arms while eating cold instant noodles.
— Marc? What are you doing here? I thought you weren’t coming back until after the holidays…
Without answering, he opened the refrigerator. It was almost empty. Meat, fruit, dairy products, ham, and even the baby’s milk were gone.
— Where are my mother and my sister?
Élise hesitated before telling him everything. Monique, her mother-in-law, claimed that after her surgery, Élise needed to eat light food. So she had taken away a large portion of the groceries. Worse still, she had forbidden Élise from calling Marc, insisting that he worked too much and shouldn’t be disturbed.
Then Élise showed him a post from Caroline.
In the video, Monique was in Tenerife, standing in front of a huge table filled with food. She was even wearing the cashmere scarf Marc had given Élise. Caroline, Julien, and their son Thomas were also there.
The meal had been paid for with the money Marc had sent for his wife and baby.
— Real family always stays together! Monique declared, raising her glass.
Caroline burst out laughing.
— Daughters-in-law will always remain strangers!
Marc silently took Élise to the hospital and photographed the kitchen as well as the note his mother had left: “Don’t call him. He’s working.”
Later, he checked the bank account managed by Monique.

Intrigued, he asked his bank for the details of the transactions. The account holder was… Julien, his sister Caroline’s husband.
Marc remained silent. Going back several months, he discovered that nearly 32,000 euros had been secretly transferred from the account he had entrusted to his mother.
But the worst was yet to come.
He then found messages between Monique and Caroline. In them, they spoke of Élise as an obstacle and explained that they planned to push Marc into divorcing her after the baby was born.
They had even planned to make him believe that Élise was secretly spending his money.
Marc felt his blood run cold. He then realized that the 8,000 euros were only the visible part of a much larger scam.
