I returned from my oil rig two weeks early. When I arrived, I discovered my eight-year-old son preparing dinner for a stranger’s children, with his arm in a bandage. 😢😢

My name is Wade. I worked offshore on an oil rig to provide a good life for my wife, Brandi, and our son, Finn.

That evening, a man named Dwight was sitting in my armchair. His two boys were watching television while Finn stood on a chair, cooking pasta.😢

“Dad, please don’t get angry,” my son whispered.

“What happened to your arm?”

“I burned myself. Dwight said I’d have to sleep outside again if dinner wasn’t ready.”

My heart sank. Brandi came home around one in the morning. She defended Dwight and downplayed Finn’s injury.

The next day, I found my old phone in a closet. In the Notes app, there was a folder called “FOR DAD.”

It contained 26 messages Finn had written while I was away. I opened the last one. His first words shook me to my core.😢

And the rest made me realize that my son had needed help for a very long time… What I read deeply shocked me. I could never have imagined what had happened there.😮😮

The last message read:

“Dad, today Dwight locked me in the shed again. I was cold. I tried to call Mom, but she told me to stop crying. I hope you’ll come home soon.”

I continued reading the other notes.

Finn explained that he had to prepare meals, clean the house, and look after Dwight’s two boys. Whenever he refused, he was punished.

One message broke my heart in particular:

“Dad, I don’t tell you anything on the phone because Mom is always standing next to me. She says you’ll be angry with me.”

I immediately went to Finn’s bedroom.

“My boy, why didn’t you tell me anything?”

He burst into tears.

“I thought you wouldn’t believe me.”

I held him tightly in my arms.

“I believe you. And no one will ever do anything like this to you again.”

I took him to the hospital to have his burn examined. The doctor also discovered several older injuries.

I showed the messages to the authorities and asked for protection for my son.

When Brandi realized what was happening, she started screaming.

“You’re going to destroy our family!”

“No, Brandi. You’re the ones who hurt Finn.”

An investigation was opened. Dwight had to answer the allegations of abuse. Brandi was also questioned for allowing the abuse to happen.

With the help of my lawyer, I obtained a temporary court order allowing Finn to stay with me.

I then requested a job onshore so I wouldn’t have to be away from home for such long periods anymore.

A few weeks later, Finn was making cookies with me.

Suddenly, he looked at me.

“Dad, can I stop if I get tired?”

I put down my rolling pin.

“Of course, my boy. Here, you don’t have to do anything to deserve being loved.”

He smiled at me and wrapped his arms tightly around me.
