A 35-year-old single man adopted me and my four brothers and sisters after our parents died. For twenty years, he refused to explain why. But on his birthday, he showed us an old photo that left us deeply shaken… 😢
I was eight years old when our parents died in an accident. There were five of us children, three girls and two boys, and no one wanted to take all of us in.
Our relatives offered to take one or two of us. We risked being separated forever.
Then Thomas arrived. He was thirty-five years old, lived alone, and had no children. Yet he decided to adopt all five of us.
He learned how to style my sisters’ hair, took us to school, and never missed our birthdays. He worked incredibly hard so that we would never go without anything.
Over time, we started calling him Dad. But one question haunted us.
— Why did you adopt us when you didn’t even know us?
He always smiled.
— That doesn’t matter. What matters is that we are together.
Twenty years passed. We became adults and started our own families, but Thomas remained our dad. A few days before his birthday, he called us.
— All five of you, come on Saturday. Without your children. I need to tell you something.
Worried, we imagined the worst. On Saturday morning, Thomas was waiting for us in the dining room. He seemed nervous.
— I’ve been hiding something from you for twenty years, he whispered.
Then he took an old photograph out of an envelope. In it, we saw our parents, much younger, smiling beside a man.
It was Thomas.😮 But what was written on the back of the photo left us speechless…😮😮.

On the back of the photo, our mother had written: « To Thomas, our best friend. If anything ever happens to us, we know that our children will be in good hands. »
I looked at Thomas, overwhelmed.
— You knew our parents?
He nodded, his eyes filled with tears.
— Your father was my best friend since childhood. He had saved my life in an accident, years before you were born.
Then he lowered his voice.
— A few weeks before their deaths, your parents asked me to become your guardian if anything happened to them.
My sister began to cry.
— Then why did you never tell us anything?
— Because I didn’t want you to think that I was raising you out of obligation.
He wiped away his tears.
— At first, I was keeping a promise. But very quickly, you became my children. I have never regretted my choice.
We stood up to embrace him. My brother whispered to him:
— You sacrificed twenty years of your life for us.
Thomas smiled.
— No. You gave me twenty years of happiness.
That day, we understood that he hadn’t simply kept a promise. He had become our father out of love.
