My birthday party was supposed to be perfect, at least that’s what everyone had been repeating for weeks. Pink and gold balloons floated on the ceiling, the cake stood in the middle of the table, and the guests were laughing over glasses of wine. Yet from the moment I arrived, I felt that something was wrong.
Camille, my daughter-in-law, had barely looked at me. Since her marriage to my son Julien, our relationship had always been tense, but that evening her silence was different, icy. Every time our eyes met, she looked away as if she were holding back immense anger.
I pretended not to notice anything.
— Is everything okay? Julien asked me quietly.
I smiled.
— Of course.
But deep inside, a growing unease settled in. During dinner, the conversations seemed normal, yet a strange tension filled the air. Camille laughed too loudly at the guests’ jokes, then suddenly became silent again.
The guests brought in the cake while someone was singing “Happy Birthday.” Camille was holding a glass of red wine in her hand. Her fingers were trembling.
Then everything happened in a few seconds. She suddenly approached me.
— How could you do that?!
Before I could understand, the wine splashed onto my face and dress. The conversations stopped immediately. The silence in the room was terrifying. Julien jumped to his feet.
— Camille!
But she was already crying.
— She has been lying to us for years!
All eyes turned toward me.

Camille wiped her tears angrily while everyone looked at her in silence.
— Do you want to know why I did this? she asked in a trembling voice. Because I can no longer tolerate your lies.
Julien approached her.
— Camille, calm down and explain to us.
She took her phone and showed Julien several messages. His face immediately changed as he read them.
— For months, your mother has been talking behind our backs, Camille said. She tells the whole family that I’m not good enough for you.
I immediately felt panic rising in me.
— That’s not true…
— Stop! Camille shouted. I saw everything. The messages, the calls… everything.
She took a breath before adding, her voice breaking:
— She also wrote that since I can’t have children, I should leave this family so Julien can find “a real woman capable of giving him a baby”.
A shocking silence filled the room.
Julien slowly looked up at me.
— Mom… did you really write that?
I could no longer respond. The guests were now avoiding my gaze.
Camille was crying uncontrollably.
— Do you know how much I suffered? The doctors, the treatments, the miscarriages… and all this time you smiled at me in front of everyone while you wanted me to disappear.
Julien clenched the phone in his hand with anger.
— She is my wife. Whether we have a child or not, it’s nobody’s business.
The decorations, the music, the cake… none of it mattered anymore. This birthday party had just revealed what everyone had been trying to hide for too long.
