But when I suggested sitting on her husband’s lap, she panicked. And her reaction revealed something unexpected… 😱
That evening, my husband, Julien, and I had been invited to a party with friends. My best friend, Sophie, was there with her husband, Nicolas.
We had been friends for twelve years. I trusted her completely. At one point, I stepped away to use the bathroom for a few minutes.
When I returned, I stopped dead in my tracks. Sophie was sitting on Julien’s lap, her arms wrapped around his neck. Her own chair was right beside him.
— Sophie, what are you doing?
She burst out laughing.
— Oh, relax! We’re just joking!
I looked at Julien. He simply shrugged.
— It’s nothing, sweetheart.
I wanted to cry, but I stayed calm. Then I noticed Nicolas, Sophie’s husband. He was watching the scene without smiling. That was when I got an idea.
— Since it’s just a harmless joke, I can sit on Nicolas’s lap too, right?
Sophie immediately stood up.
— Absolutely not!
The conversations stopped.
— Why? I asked. You just did exactly the same thing.
Her face turned red.
— Because that would be inappropriate!
— And what you were doing with my husband wasn’t inappropriate?
Nicolas slowly stood up.
— Sophie, I think it’s time to tell her the truth.
Julien lowered his eyes.
And when Nicolas explained what he had known for several weeks, I realized that this evening was hiding much more than a bad joke… 😨

Nicolas looked at Sophie, then at my husband.
— Sophie has been exchanging messages with Julien for several weeks. I discovered them on our tablet.
I felt my legs begin to tremble.
— What kind of messages?
Nicolas took out his phone.
— Secret meetings. Declarations of love. And even plans to leave together.
Sophie immediately protested.
— Nicolas, you had no right to snoop through my things!
— And you had the right to lie to me?
I turned toward Julien.
— Is it true?
He lowered his head.
— Yes… But we never wanted to hurt you.
That sentence hurt me more than anything else.
— Then why did you keep lying to me?
Nobody answered. Nicolas explained that he had suspected their relationship for a month but had waited to see how far they would go.
That evening, Sophie had deliberately provoked the scene, convinced that I wouldn’t react. I grabbed my bag and left the party.
Julien tried to follow me, but I asked him to stay. A few weeks later, I filed for divorce. Nicolas made the same decision.
I also cut off all contact with Sophie. I had lost my husband and my best friend. But at last, I had stopped trusting people who no longer respected me.
