“Seven months pregnant, I came home completely exhausted after twelve hours of work. My husband slapped me in front of his mother, then stopped me from calling emergency services when I started bleeding. But when I asked him to call my father, he burst out laughing. He had absolutely no idea who this man really was…” 😱
It was 8:20 p.m. when I got home. My legs were swollen, and my back was hurting terribly.
I had barely stepped through the door when my husband, Adrien, hit me.
— You’re coming home at this hour? Go prepare dinner for my mother!
My mother-in-law, Madeleine, was watching television.
— A good wife doesn’t complain!
Despite my pain, I prepared the meal. But when Madeleine tasted it, she pushed her plate away.
— This is inedible!
— I really don’t feel well, I whispered.
She violently shoved me against the kitchen counter. A terrible pain shot through my abdomen. A few seconds later, I felt blood running down my legs.
— My baby! Call an ambulance!
Adrien grabbed my phone and threw it onto the floor.
— You’re not calling anyone!
I was terrified.
— You can’t do anything to me, he added. I’m a lawyer, and my uncle works at the prosecutor’s office.
Then I thought of my father, whose real profession I had never told anyone about.
— Then call Dad.
Adrien burst out laughing.
— Your poor father? What’s he going to do?
He dialed the number and put the phone on speaker. After three rings, a deep voice answered.
— Sweetheart? What’s wrong?
I whispered:
— Dad, I’m bleeding… He refuses to call emergency services.
There was a silence. Then my father said a few words that made Adrien turn pale… 😨

— I am the state’s attorney general. Adrien, call emergency services immediately. I want to hear your call.
My husband turned as white as a sheet.
— Sir… I didn’t know you were her father…
— That should never have made a difference, Dad replied. My daughter needs an ambulance. Now!
Adrien dialed the emergency number with trembling hands. A few minutes later, the paramedics arrived. My father had also alerted them to the situation.
At the hospital, the doctors discovered a placental abruption. An emergency C-section saved my son’s life.
He was born prematurely, but he was alive.
When I woke up, Dad was sitting beside my bed.
— You don’t have to go back to that house ever again, he told me.
With the help of an independent lawyer, I filed a complaint against Adrien and Madeleine. The doctors documented my injuries, and the police took my statement.
An investigation was opened. My father stayed out of the case to avoid a conflict of interest. I then filed for divorce and obtained a protective order.
Two months later, I finally brought my baby home. Not to Adrien’s house. To my own home, a place where no one would ever make us afraid again.
