My son Tom’s first day of school should have been a happy day. Yet everything changed when my mother-in-law, Marie, showed up outside the school, even though I had clearly asked her not to come. The day before, we had had a terrible argument.
For several weeks, she had insisted that we change Tom to another school, without ever giving a real reason.
“This is not the right place for him,” she kept repeating. I finally asked her to respect our decision and not come the next day. She left angrily.
Yet the following morning, she was there, holding a huge bouquet of flowers. Tom was delighted to see his grandmother and immediately ran toward her. I said nothing so as not to ruin his first day of school. A few minutes later, his teacher, Julie, asked me to speak with her privately. Her behavior immediately made me suspicious. She looked uncomfortable and kept glancing at Marie.
Then she asked me a strange question:
“Did Marie tell you about it?”
I realized that she knew my mother-in-law.

I turned toward him. He was watching us from the other side of the schoolyard.

I asked the teacher how she knew my husband. She remained silent for a moment, then looked at Marie and whispered:
“Your husband was at my house last night.”

I remained speechless for several seconds. The document Julie had just handed me contained information that no one had ever revealed to me.
Tom needed special educational support because of a problem that had been detected when he was still a baby. The doctors had recommended a school capable of providing him with appropriate support, but the paperwork had never been properly transferred.
I turned to Paul, devastated.
— Why did you never tell me?
He lowered his head.
— Because I was afraid. I thought you would panic and immediately want to change everything.
Marie then spoke.
— That is why I wanted him to change schools so badly. I have known Julie for a long time, and I knew that this school could really help him.
I looked at Julie. She nodded in confirmation.
— We noticed a few things when Tom was enrolled. Paul came to see me last night because he wanted to make sure that his file was complete before the start of the school year.
Everything suddenly became clear.
The anger I had felt toward Marie turned into guilt. She was not trying to control our lives. She was simply trying, in her own clumsy way, to protect her grandson.
