The first time Paul suspected that his parents were living like servants in their own home was when his mother whispered to him:

Paul froze because for months he had been sending 4,000 euros every month for his parents’ medication, food, heating, and home assistance. His sister Julie handled everything and regularly sent him bills and reassuring photos.
Yet something was wrong.
— Mom, I paid for a new boiler in November.
Silence, and then Paul heard Julie:
— Are you talking to Paul again? Give me the phone.
The next morning, Paul secretly called his father.
— Dad, tell me the truth.
— Do not send any more money.
— Why?
— Because it does not reach us.
