I was 41 years old and had been married to Marc for sixteen years. We lived with our 15-year-old daughter, Emma, and my mother-in-law, Jeanne.
For years, I had devoted my life to my family. After Emma was born, I gave up my sewing workshop, and later I took care of Marc’s father during his illness. Everyone knew that Marc could count on me.
Marc ran the family refrigeration company with his sister. I owned the house I had inherited from my parents, and I had invested a substantial amount of money that I had received after my grandfather’s death. In total, I had 7 million euros in an account in my name.
Jeanne knew all about my financial situation. A few days earlier, she had undergone surgery, and I spent my days at her bedside. Marc, meanwhile, claimed that he was overwhelmed with work.
One morning, I simply went out to get a coffee. When I returned, I spotted Marc’s van in front of the maternity hospital.
I saw him get out of the vehicle and help a pregnant woman out. I recognized her immediately: Laura, a former employee of his company. Marc was carrying a baby bag and admission documents. I followed them discreetly.
Before entering the elevator, Laura asked:
— What if Clara sees us?
Marc looked around before whispering:
— My mother will keep her occupied. Clara always obeys.
Laura placed a hand on her belly.
— Does Jeanne know about the baby?
Marc smiled.
— Ever since she found out it’s a boy, she hasn’t asked any more questions.
I stood there completely frozen. It wasn’t just a betrayal. While I was taking care of his mother at the hospital, my husband was accompanying another pregnant woman to the maternity ward.
But what I didn’t know yet was that their affair was only the beginning of a much more dangerous secret.

I didn’t make a scene. I returned to Jeanne’s room, put down my coffee, and watched her sleeping face. For the first time, I realized that her weakness might have been carefully calculated for a very long time.
I left the hospital and immediately called a lawyer. I told her everything and asked her to check my accounts, the house, and the documents related to Marc’s company.
That same evening, she discovered several suspicious transfers made from a joint account, as well as a contract preparing to transfer part of my assets into Marc’s name.
I then signed the necessary documents to protect my seven million euros and put the house up for sale.
The next morning, I received a file containing a copy of Jeanne’s recently amended will. My name appeared in it as the sole heir… but a signature at the bottom of the last page made me freeze.
It wasn’t Jeanne’s signature.
