My husband had told me that all the flights were fully booked. So I had no choice but to take a 50-hour train ride to get home. I was six months pregnant and exhausted, while Thomas and his sister Claire traveled comfortably in first class.
Thomas looked at me with a cold smile.

Claire, sitting beside him, seemed perfectly satisfied. Thomas claimed that there were no more flights available and that only two private cabins remained on the train.
I didn’t protest. I stayed silent.

When the doors opened, I got off the train. I bought neither food nor drinks. I simply watched the train disappear into the snow.
Thomas and Claire probably thought I would return with their meal. They had no idea that I was heading straight to the airport.
