When I returned from my mission, my wife Claire had told the entire family that my father James suffered from dementia and could become violent.
As I entered the house, I immediately realized that something was wrong.
I found my father, a former FBI agent, locked in a dark room. He was perfectly conscious, but there were marks around his wrists.
Claire calmly explained that she was trying to protect him. She had arranged a psychiatric evaluation and prepared documents to take control of his finances.
I pretended to believe her.
I waited until the house was quiet before going to see my father.
When I entered his room, he said nothing. He simply tapped his fingers against the armrest of his chair.
I understood immediately.
He was using Morse code.

My father explained that he had defended himself against the man who had been introduced as his caregiver and that the man had tried to test his strength.
A few seconds later, footsteps echoed in the hallway. My father immediately changed his behavior and acted like a confused man.
I closed the door and returned to Claire without arousing her suspicions. That night, I used my computer to check the traces she thought she had erased.
What I discovered went far beyond an attempt to take control of my father. Claire was preparing something much more serious.
The next day, she thought the psychiatrist would confirm her story. She had no idea that I had already given him a complete file.
When the doctor opened it in front of her, her face immediately changed. For the first time, Claire realized that she had made a terrible mistake.

Claire turned pale. She tried to respond, but the doctor pulled out several photographs, bank statements, and recordings.
“Your husband gave me everything last night.”
I remained silent.
Claire then realized that her own messages had been recovered. They proved that she had hired the caregiver and organized the entire scheme to have my father declared incapable of managing his own affairs.
But the worst was yet to come. My father entered the room accompanied by a real doctor. He walked slowly, like a frail and weak man.
Claire smiled nervously.
“See? He is completely confused!”
My father then raised his head.
“Confused? That’s strange, because I remember perfectly everything you did.”
An icy silence filled the room.
He then revealed that he had secretly recorded several conversations with the caregiver. The man had eventually agreed to testify against Claire.
A few minutes later, the police were called.
As Claire left the house, she looked at me with tears in her eyes. She thought she had trapped my father.
She simply did not know that a former FBI agent could recognize a trap better than anyone else. That day, my father regained his freedom… and I discovered who my wife really was.
