It was my day off. After several particularly exhausting weeks at the police station, I finally had a quiet day ahead of me. So I decided to go out with Rex, my police dog, an exceptional German Shepherd I have been working with for almost four years. Even on my days off, I often prefer to stay with him. This dog is not just my working partner, he has become a true friend.
That Saturday, I just wanted to do some shopping in a supermarket near my home. I thought it would also be a good opportunity for Rex to get out, walk a bit and see people. He was calm, relaxed, almost playful. Nothing suggested what was about to happen a few minutes later.
We had been in the aisles for about ten minutes. I was calmly filling my cart while Rex walked beside me, on a leash. Suddenly, his behavior changed. He stopped dead. His ears stood up and he began sniffing the air in a strange way.
At first, I thought he had simply smelled food. But quickly, he became nervous. He was circling around me, pulling slightly on his leash, looking in different directions. I knew this behavior perfectly: something had caught his attention.
I tried to calm him, but the further we went into the store, the more agitated he seemed. Then, when we arrived near a man in his forties who was looking at products on a shelf, everything changed.
Rex suddenly lunged at him, barking with incredible aggression. I had never seen such a reaction even on a simple day off. I had to use all my strength to hold my dog back. The man, completely panicked, stepped back abruptly and almost knocked over a shelf.
Customers started screaming. The supermarket employees immediately intervened and asked us to move away to avoid an accident. The atmosphere had become extremely tense.
While I was still trying to calm Rex, something struck me. My dog never acted without reason. His instinct was one of the best in the service.
I then discreetly asked an employee to call a patrol.
A few minutes later, the police arrived. The man seemed increasingly nervous. He was sweating, avoiding eye contact, and kept repeating that he had done nothing.
But when the officers searched his bag and jacket, everyone froze on the spot.😱😱😱
