Tom had received $300 for his birthday. He had been saving every dollar because he wanted to buy a telescope.
But Grandpa took the money from him and said coldly:
— Boys can do without it. Girls need it more.
I immediately protested, but Grandpa called me selfish and said that Tom’s dream of buying a telescope was nothing but a “waste of money.”
My mother and my sister remained silent while Tom handed his $300 to Grandpa, who intended to give it to his granddaughter Léa.
I thought that humiliation was the end of it, but I was wrong.
Two days later, I found eleven envelopes on the table by the entrance. Tom had personally written one to every family member who had given him money.
The letter to Aunt Marie said:
Dear Aunt Marie,
Thank you for my birthday gift. Grandpa took the money and gave it to Léa because he says girls need it more. I still wanted to thank you for thinking of me.

There was no anger and no accusation, just the truth.
The next day, I watched Tom put all eleven letters into the mailbox. I could still have stopped him, but I didn’t.
On Wednesday morning, while I was working at the beauty salon, my phone vibrated. I had six missed calls from AUNT MARIE.
I called her back.
— Anna, where is your father?
— Why?
— I just received Tom’s letter. And I’m not the only one.
— What’s happening?
— The family group chat just exploded. Everyone received the same letter. Your uncle Paul is already in his car.
Marie continued:
— Anna, we all thought the money was still with Tom. Your father lied to us.
— And this time, the whole family is going to demand answers from him.

One hour later, my father came home and found the entire family gathered in the living room. Aunt Marie placed Tom’s letter on the table.

My father remained silent.
Grandpa tried to defend him, saying that the money had been given to help Léa, but no one listened.
Paul pulled out his phone and said:
— I checked my bank statements. I gave Tom $200. Where did that money go?
An icy silence filled the room.
My father finally admitted that he had taken Tom’s money several times, always claiming that he would give it back later. But in reality, he had used part of it for his own personal expenses.
Tom stood near the stairs. He didn’t cry. He simply looked at his father with such disappointment that it broke my heart.
Then he whispered:
— I didn’t want to embarrass you. I just wanted you to know the truth.
Aunt Marie stood up and placed an envelope in front of Tom.
— Here are the $200 I gave you. And this time, no one is going to take them from you.
The other family members did the same.
Within minutes, Tom had recovered far more than the $300 that had been taken from him.
But most importantly, he had recovered something far more valuable: his voice.
