No one really knew Anna. To the townspeople, she was simply “the widow.” Every morning, before dawn, she crossed the cobblestone square alone, wrapped in her old shawl. Since her husband’s death, she had lived modestly and gathered firewood near the ravine to heat her small house.
But that morning, something was about to change her life.
When Anna opened her door, she discovered a badly wounded man covered in mud, desperately holding a newborn baby in his arms. He was barely breathing.😮
— The baby… Where is he? he whispered as he opened his eyes.
Anna pointed to the small basket beside the fireplace. Relieved, the man caught his breath before grabbing her arm.
— Listen to me… If Victor finds out that we are alive, he will come and kill us.
Victor was the town’s mayor and the owner of the enormous hacienda that dominated the entire region. Rich, powerful, and feared, he had always managed to silence anyone who threatened his interests.
Suddenly, three violent knocks made the door shake.
— Open up, widow!
Anna immediately recognized the voice of Mark, the mayor’s right-hand man, a man known for his brutality.
— Hide me… I beg you, the wounded man whispered before losing consciousness.
Without thinking, Anna hid the baby inside an old wooden chest, then covered the man with sacks of corn.
Mark entered with two men.
— A wounded man crossed the mountains last night with a baby. Did you see them?
— I didn’t see anyone, Anna replied.
Mark smiled coldly, drew his weapon, and slowly walked toward the chest.

Mark placed his hand on the lid of the chest. Anna realized she had only a few seconds left.
— Wait! she suddenly shouted. This chest is filled with flour. If you open it, you’ll ruin everything.
Mark stared at her for a long moment, then burst into a cold laugh.
— You really think you can lie to me?
He raised his weapon.
At that moment, a faint whimper came from behind the sacks of corn.
Mark turned around abruptly. Anna felt the blood freeze in her veins.
But before he could move closer, the sound of horses echoed in the distance. Several riders were quickly approaching the house. Mark hesitated.
— Who is coming? one of his men asked.
A few seconds later, the door was violently thrown open and two town guards appeared.
— The mayor sent us. He wants you to return to the hacienda immediately.
Mark clenched his teeth. He cast one last look at Anna, then left with his men.
As soon as they were gone, Anna rushed to the chest and freed the baby. Then she woke the wounded man.
When he opened his eyes, he whispered:
— You must leave… The baby is Victor’s son.
Anna stood frozen.
— What?
The man then revealed the truth to her: Victor had made his own family disappear in order to seize the newborn’s inheritance.
But there was one thing he didn’t know: Anna had discovered the evidence that could bring him down.
And that evidence had been hidden in the house for years.
