Mauricio came home after a long day of work. As soon as he stepped through the door, he felt that something was wrong. In the living room, his nieces were laughing and playing with new toys, surrounded by sweets. But from the kitchen came the sounds of water and dishes, accompanied by his mother’s strict voice:
— Scrub properly, little one. You’re not here to decorate.
Intrigued, Mauricio walked closer and discovered his adopted daughter, Renata, six years old, standing on a stool, her hands red from hot water and soap. In front of her were piles of dirty plates while her cousins played carefreely.
Renata had been part of his life since she was two years old. He had adopted her despite his family’s criticism, as they had never accepted this child as one of their own. Yet for him, she was his full daughter, his greatest happiness.
That day, he had left her with her grandparents for a few hours, convinced she would have a good time with her cousins. Seeing her treated like this, his heart tightened.
— Why is my daughter doing the dishes? he asked.
His mother replied coldly:
— No one lives for free here.
Then his father added:
— Paola’s daughters are our real granddaughters. Renata must understand that it is not the same.

Mauricio remained silent for a few seconds. Then, to everyone’s surprise, he gently placed Renata on a chair and walked into the living room.
There, he gathered all the new toys, candy packs, and gifts his nieces had received. Under the astonished gaze of his family, he piled them in the middle of the room.
— What are you doing? Paola shouted.
Mauricio turned to her.
— I’m trying to understand. These children played all day while my daughter worked. So tell me what she did to deserve different treatment.
No one answered.
He then took an envelope from his bag and placed it on the table.
— For two years, I’ve been paying for all the repairs of this house. My father’s medicine. Part of your daughters’ education. I did it because you are my family.
Their faces turned pale.
— But today, I discovered that, to you, my daughter is not part of this family.
Doña Gloria tried to protest, but Mauricio raised his hand.
— No. Listen to me until the end.
He then announced that he would withdraw all financial support starting that day. No more paid bills, no more covered expenses, no more support.
— If Renata is not “real” enough to be your granddaughter, then I am not “real” enough to support you.
A cold silence filled the house.
Then he took Renata’s hand and added:
— My daughter deserves respect. And from now on, she will grow up far from those who cannot give it to her.
This decision caused a real shock. For the first time, his family realized they had lost far more than a simple argument.
