Lucas and Emily were born eleven minutes apart. For five years, the twins were inseparable. They played together, slept in the same room, and sometimes seemed to understand each other without needing to speak.
Then, one summer, their father took them to the lake. Only Lucas returned.š®
According to his father, Emily had slipped into the water and been carried away by the current. He had tried to save her, but had been unable to reach her. Her body was never found, and the police concluded that it had been a tragic accident.
After the funeral, Lucas stopped speaking. Doctors explained that he was suffering from selective mutism related to trauma and grief. For nine years, his mother searched for every possible solution: therapy, music, drawing, and even a dog named after Emilyās favorite character. Nothing brought his speech back.
Lucas nevertheless grew up normally. At fourteen, he had become a calm, attentive teenager who was well-liked by his teachers. He communicated through gestures, looks, and expressions.
Every year, his family gathered to commemorate Emily. Once again, his father was present, sitting at the other end of the table. He carefully avoided his sonās gaze.
In the middle of dinner, Lucas suddenly put down his fork. He looked at his mother, his grandparents, then stared at his father. After nine years of silence, he opened his mouth and spoke his first words.š®š®

Lucas stared at his father for several seconds. His lips were trembling. His mother held her breath, unable to believe what she was hearing.

His fatherās face suddenly turned pale.
No one spoke.
Lucas continued, his eyes filled with tears:

Lucas looked at Emilyās photograph resting on the fireplace.

His father suddenly stood up.
ā Lucas, you donāt know what youāre talking about!
But Lucas shook his head.
ā I know exactly what I saw.
He then revealed something that froze the entire room: his father had deliberately let go of Emilyās hand after holding it for several seconds.
Why?
Lucas explained that before leaving for the lake, he had heard his parents arguing about a secret that Emily had discovered.
His mother slowly turned toward her husband.

The man remained silent.
Then Lucas spoke one final sentence:

At that moment, the police were called.
