My name is Anna, and I was eighty-nine years old when my husband, John, died. Two weeks later, I found myself in the office of his lawyer, Mark, with our three children and Lisa, John’s sister.
My daughter, Emma, looked at me with concern. My eldest son, Tom, brought me a glass of water. My youngest son, Sam, stood by the window, nervously checking his phone.
Lisa sat beside me.
“You don’t have to stay if this is too difficult for you,” she whispered.
I looked at her calmly.
“I buried my husband after sixty-eight years of marriage. I can handle the reading of a will.”
She smiled gently, as though she thought my age made me fragile. Then Mark walked in carrying a thick folder.
John had trusted him for more than twenty years. He placed the folder on the table and slowly opened the will.
“We’ll begin,” he said.

Mark adjusted his glasses and began to read: “To my wife, Anna, I leave neither the house, nor money, nor any property.”
An icy silence filled the room. Emma covered her mouth with one hand. Tom stared at me in shock. Even Lisa frowned.
But Mark continued: “I also ask that my family believe Anna has been completely excluded from my inheritance. It is the only way to protect what I have prepared for her.”
I suddenly raised my head. Mark then pulled a second envelope from the folder.
“John instructed me not to open this until after the main will had been read.”
He handed it to me. My fingers trembled as I opened it. Inside was a letter:
“My dear Anna, if you are reading this, it means I am no longer here. I knew that some people would try to take advantage of your vulnerability after my death. So, several months before I died, I secretly transferred our house, our savings, and my investments into your name. But I wanted everyone to believe that you had received nothing.”
I was speechless. Then Mark added:
“And that’s not all. John also left instructions concerning his sister, Lisa.”
Lisa turned pale.
“What instructions?” she asked.
Mark placed a stack of documents in front of her.
“These. You need to sign them today.”
She had no idea that by signing them, she was about to trigger exactly the trap John had prepared for her.
