Thomas Delorme was a feared businessman. In France, he was nicknamed the King of Construction, so much did his real estate projects transform cities. Nothing seemed capable of moving him.
Until that morning.
Walking into a small bakery in Toulouse to buy a coffee, he spotted his ex-wife, Claire Dubois.
She no longer had her former elegance. Dressed simply, she carefully counted a few coins at the counter. Beside her, two identical little boys watched in silence.
One whispered shyly:
— Mom, if it’s not enough, I can go without bread.
Claire replied with a tender smile:
— Don’t worry, my love. We will manage.
Moved by the scene, the baker discreetly added two pastries into the bag.
Thomas immediately left the place, shaken.
The next day, he asked his assistant for a full investigation into Claire.
The report revealed that she was a science teacher at a public school and was raising two four-year-old twins alone, Lucas and Nathan.
Seeing their birth date, Thomas felt his heart stop: they were born only seven months after their divorce.
He also learned that Claire was drowning in more than 230,000 euros of debt, contracted after a premature birth. To pay for her children’s care, she had worked tirelessly and sold all her possessions.
Without revealing his identity, Thomas financed a 500,000-euro science laboratory for her school.
But a few days later, Claire discovered the truth.
That same evening, Thomas called her.
— Claire… we need to talk.
After a long silence, she replied coldly:
— Come up… but know this: you still have no idea what you’ve done. And what was revealed next was a true shock for Thomas.😱😱

Thomas slowly climbed the stairs. Entering the apartment, he saw the two boys asleep on the sofa, pressed against each other. Claire stood there, arms crossed.
— Do you want to know what you did? she asked in a trembling voice.
Thomas nodded silently.
Claire opened an old drawer and took out a worn envelope. Inside were about ten letters.
— I wrote to you for months. When I found out I was pregnant, when the doctors told me the babies might die, when I had no money at all… I told you everything.
Thomas took the letters with a trembling hand. They had never been opened.
— I… I never received them…
Claire lowered her eyes.
— Because your father intercepted them. He told me you never wanted to hear from me again. He even offered me money to disappear.
Thomas felt the ground slip beneath his feet.
All his life, he had believed Claire had left of her own free will.
Tears rose in his eyes as he finally understood the truth: four years with his own sons had been stolen from him.
For the first time in his life, the millionaire businessman understood that some losses can never be replaced with money.
