Élise lived in a large house in Montauban, but she felt like a stranger in it. Her husband, Julien Morel, was seen as a respectable man: hardworking, pious, and very attached to his family. Yet behind closed doors, he became violent.
Élise had two daughters, Emma and Chloé. For Julien, they were a failure: he wanted a son.
— What use are you to me if you can’t even give me a boy?
Every morning, he repeated this humiliation in front of his mother, Madeleine Morel, who prayed without ever intervening, while the rest of the family looked away.
One hot day, in the kitchen filled with the smell of warm bread and fear, Julien returned furious after seeing photos of a cousin who had become the father of two boys.

Élise dared to respond:

The slap came immediately. Julien dragged her into the living room and beat her violently. The kicks hit her ribs and then her stomach. Emma screamed for him to stop, Chloé cried, but no one intervened. After a final blow, Élise collapsed, blood flowing between her legs.
At the hospital, Julien lied:
— She fell from the second floor.
Doctor Antoine Lambert noticed the old bruises and did not believe him. After several examinations, he returned with the results.
— Your wife is pregnant. She is suffering from a placental abruption caused by trauma.

The doctor added in a grave voice:
— The baby that is currently dying in her womb… is a boy.
Julien remained frozen. His face lost all color. The doctor’s words echoed in his mind without him being able to accept them. For years, he had blamed Élise for never being able to give him a son. And yet, the one he had so desired already existed.
Doctor Antoine Lambert looked him straight in the eyes.
— The violence she suffered caused this placental abruption. The baby’s life is in serious danger, and so is your wife’s.
Julien slowly lowered his head. For the first time, he had no excuse, no lie to say.
Behind the hospital room door, Élise heard every word. Tears streamed down her face as she placed a trembling hand on her stomach.
A few moments later, the nurses rushed into the room. Élise’s condition had worsened. The doctors decided to take her immediately to the operating room to try to save her life.
Julien remained alone in the corridor, unable to move. Every second of waiting reminded him of the blows, the insults, and all the suffering he had inflicted on the woman who had never stopped loving him.
A few minutes later, the operating room door opened… and the surgeon appeared with an expression that announced nothing would ever be the same again.
