The whole hall held its breath. Victor Hale turned pale as he noticed the star-shaped mark on the girl’s wrist. He knew this symbol: it was the same one that Sophie, his former rider and partner, used to bear, who mysteriously disappeared seven years earlier while taking care of this very stallion named Obsidian.
In a trembling voice, he asked the child:
— What is your name?
— Emma… she simply replied. My mother was called Sophie.
A chilling silence filled the hall. Before her disappearance, Sophie had entrusted her baby to a close friend, fearing for her safety after discovering misconduct at the stud farm. She never had time to return.
Emma then took out a worn photograph from a small pendant showing her mother with Obsidian. The stallion sniffed the image and gently rested his head on the girl’s shoulder.
