It was a little after 9 p.m. when I asked Maria, a 65-year-old cleaning lady who had been working in my pastry shop for three years, to open her suitcase in front of the other employees.
— Open it, please. For several weeks, products have been disappearing from our supplies. And you are the only one who leaves every evening with such a heavy suitcase. 😮😮
Maria looked at me without answering. She had always been punctual, discreet and serious. Yet, for nearly two months, I had been noticing the disappearance of bags of flour, sugar, oil and other products.
I had checked the cameras, but no footage showed Maria stealing anything.
A few days earlier, however, I had heard her talking on the phone:
— Yes, my daughter… I know you still need more. Hang in there. I’m doing everything I can so that Emma doesn’t go without anything.
Those words had strengthened my suspicions. I thought she was secretly taking products home.
That evening, I therefore decided to ask her for an explanation in front of everyone.
Maria slowly placed her suitcase on the floor.
— You could have asked me to open it in private, she said sadly. But since you chose to do it in front of everyone, I will also tell you the truth in front of everyone.
She opened the zipper.
I expected to find flour or sugar.
But what was inside the suitcase deeply shocked me. What I discovered there was completely unexpected and absolutely incredible. 😮😮

But the suitcase was filled with diapers, baby clothes, infant formula, rice, canned goods and hygiene products.
Then Maria handed me a photograph. It showed her daughter Sophie, her face marked with injuries, holding little Emma in her arms.
— I’m not stealing anything, she whispered. I’m only trying to help my daughter and my granddaughter.
I felt deeply ashamed.
But Maria was not finished yet. She knew why the products were really disappearing.
And when she said the name of the real culprit, I was left speechless. It was someone I had always trusted.
The name immediately sent a chill through me: it was Paul, my stock manager, the one to whom I had entrusted the keys to the storage room and the tracking of the merchandise.
Maria explained that she had seen him several times filling boxes after closing. She had remained silent because he had threatened to have her daughter fired if she spoke.
I immediately had Paul called. Confronted with the footage from the storage room cameras, he finally confessed. For months, he had been secretly reselling the pastry shop’s products and making the suspicions fall on Maria.
I turned to her, deeply shaken.
— Maria, I apologize. I humiliated you when you were simply trying to protect your family.
She wiped away her tears and replied softly:
— I didn’t want to lose my job. It’s the only way I have to take care of Emma.
That evening, I understood that before accusing someone, sometimes you have to take the time to listen to their story.
